Lime Crime: These Unicorns aren't so rare.

 RRP: $18. Available at limecrime.com
Oh the packaging. Oh the controversy. Lime Crime is brand well known for it's love of unique, bold colours and unicorn covered packaging, the rumours that run rife about whether the claims they make are, in fact, true about the authenticity and origin of their products and of course, about the many nasty goings on that have been touted as happening behind the scenes (go to this to find out more). Despite the super-sparkly-demeanour-that-hides-an-evil-soul kind of vibe that I get from this company, I must admit that I wanted to try the products that so polarised the beauty blogging world. So regardless of any witchy goings on in the background, this is going to be a review of the products themselves, and whether or not they really do deserve this kind of hype.

The lipsticks are called "Unicorn Lipsticks" and Lime Crime claims they are "Bold. Opaque. Recklessly loaded with pigment. For lips that speak louder than words." No I'm not joking. I know this company markets their products from an indie company trying to stand out point of view, but some aspects of their marketing (and yes, though I hate to say it, their packaging) looks as though it was design by a team of children that just wanted as much glitter as they could squeeze into a little tube. Personally, I do like the packaging, though I can definitely see how people would find it tacky. These lip products smell incredibly similar to Mac lipsticks, (which makes me think this was probably done on purpose, as people already associate this smell with a very well known brand of lipstick) but I don't hate it.

The colours (L to R): Glamour 101, Retrofuturist, Countessa Flourescent, Babette, Poisonberry.

Onto the lipsticks themselves. I'll start by talking about Glamour 101, Poisonberry and Babette. These lipsticks are incredibly thick and are very drying on my lips. They don't apply very evenly, especially Babette, and they tend to bunch up and cling to any dry patches that I may have. Neither Poisonberry or Glamour 101 are opaque with one coat, though as they are dark this is less noticeable. They will last an hour or two ( while still looking nice) but after that they become patchy, and every single one stains my lips like crazy. I would probably compare these three to a thicker version of the Mac satin finish lipsticks (though personally I prefer Mac). However Retrofuturist and Countessa Flourescent are both very creamy, more similar to Mac's Amplified Cream lipsticks and they apply quite nicely to the lips. They are far nicer than the other three, though I'm not sure if that is a consistent fault with the line or if it really is just hit and miss.

Overall, as much as I personally love the packaging and colour range, the glaring inconsistences within the line and subpar quality, paired with the $18 pricetag, makes these a miss for me. There are better, cheaper alternatives to the fun colours (try the Nyx macaroon lippies) or if you just want some not too expensive higher end lipsticks, go for Mac. These really aren't worth the spend.
